Disturbing Ragging Incident at Kottayam Nursing College: A Wake-Up Call for Indian Campuses

In a shocking development, a brutal ragging incident has come to light at the Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala. The case has stirred public outrage and raised serious concerns about the persistence of ragging on Indian campuses, despite laws and strict regulations aimed at curbing such practices.

A disturbing video of the incident has emerged, showing a first-year student being subjected to severe physical and emotional abuse by senior students. The heart-wrenching footage shows the victim writhing in pain as he is tied to a bed, with his body pricked and tormented using tools, all while his tormentors mock him and laugh. The video's revelation has once again put the spotlight on the dark reality of ragging, which continues to haunt numerous college campuses across the country.

A Harrowing Video Unveils the Reality of Ragging

The video that surfaced on social media shows a junior student in agony, his hands and legs tied to a bed, as he is subjected to intense torture by senior students. The victim is pricked with a compass and has lotion poured over his wounds, which causes even more pain. The horrific clip also shows a dumbbell placed on the victim's genitals and cloth clips attached to his nipples, while the tormentors continue to laugh at his suffering. The victim's painful cries only highlight the shocking cruelty that continues in some educational institutions, despite legal measures against ragging.

The Victims Speak Out: A Long-Hidden Agony

The torment began in November 2024 and lasted for approximately three months before the victims—three first-year students—bravely filed a police complaint. The students claimed that the senior students had been extorting money from them every Sunday, demanding they buy alcohol for them. Those who refused to comply were reportedly beaten up as part of the punishment.

The situation finally came to light when one of the victims, unable to bear the abuse any longer, confided in his father, who encouraged him to approach the authorities. This courageous act led to the arrest of
five accused students: Samuel Johnson (20), Rahul Raj (22), Jeeva (18), Rijil Jith (20), and Vivek (21). The students were subsequently suspended from the college.

Ragging: An Issue That Continues to Haunt Indian Campuses

This case is not an isolated incident. It follows closely behind the tragic suicide of 15-year-old Mihir Ahammed in Kochi, allegedly as a result of ragging at his school. Mihir was reportedly subjected to physical abuse, verbal humiliation, and forced to perform degrading tasks like licking a toilet seat, leading to his untimely death. Both these incidents underline the mental and emotional toll that ragging continues to take on young students, often pushing them to their limits.

Despite the Ragging Prevention Act and other anti-ragging laws in place across India, these cases persist, highlighting a systemic issue that needs immediate attention.

The Impact on Students and the Need for Change

Ragging not only causes severe physical pain but also leaves deep emotional scars. Many victims suffer from anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can affect their studies, relationships, and overall well-being. The trauma may also have long-lasting effects, leading some to even contemplate drastic actions like suicide, as seen in the case of Mihir Ahammed.

It is high time for educational institutions to take responsibility and implement stricter measures to prevent ragging. While many universities have formed anti-ragging committees, the enforcement of these laws remains weak in many places. Universities must ensure these committees are not just a formality but are actively engaged in addressing complaints and creating awareness.

The Role of Parents, Authorities, and Society

Parents must also play an active role in their children’s lives, maintaining open communication and creating an environment where children feel safe to report any incidents of ragging or bullying. The authorities need to ensure that punishments for ragging are swift and severe, sending a strong message to potential perpetrators that such behavior will not be tolerated.

Conclusion: A Call for Collective Action Against Ragging

The shocking incidents in Kottayam and Kochi should serve as a wake-up call for society as a whole. Ragging is not just a harmless tradition— it’s a crime that leaves deep scars on its victims. Educational institutions, authorities, parents, and students must all come together to eradicate this menace once and for all. Strict enforcement of anti-ragging laws, awareness programs, and better mental health support systems for students are key to ensuring that campuses become a safe space for learning.

Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has publicly acknowledged that he was mistaken in opposing India’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war when it first erupted in 2022. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on Tuesday during a session titled ‘Waging Peace: Looking Back to Look Ahead’ , Tharoor candidly admitted that India’s diplomatic approach has, in hindsight, positioned the country as a potential peacemaker on the global stage. "An Egg on My Face" – Tharoor’s Honest Reflection "I am still wiping the egg off my face because I am one person in the parliamentary debate who actually criticized the Indian position at the time back in February 2022," Tharoor confessed. At the time, he had strongly condemned Russia’s military actions, advocating that India should denounce the aggression based on principles of the UN Charter, the sovereignty of Ukraine, and the inviolability of international borders . However, with three years of g...

Delhi High Court Denies Maintenance to Educated Wife: A Landmark Ruling

In a recent judgment, the Delhi High Court held that a well-educated woman, capable of earning a living, should not remain unemployed just to claim maintenance from her husband. The ruling came in response to a revision petition filed by a woman challenging a family court’s 2022 decision that denied her interim maintenance. The Court’s Stand on Maintenance Justice Chandra Dhari Singh stated that Section 125 of the CrPC aims to protect dependent spouses, children, and parents but does not encourage idleness. He asserted that women with professional qualifications and work experience should make efforts to become financially independent rather than relying on alimony. The court upheld the family court’s decision, noting that the petitioner had a Master’s degree in International Business from the University of Wollongong, Australia , which demonstrated her capability to earn. Furthermore, she had previously worked in Dubai as an Audit Associate at KPMG and later as an HR Manage...
