BJP Responds to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann's Claims on Deportation Controversy at Amritsar Airport

The political clash between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over deportation of illegal immigrants has taken center stage. On February 15, the second flight carrying deported Indian nationals from the United States landed at Amritsar airport, sparking a controversy. Mann raised concerns, accusing the BJP-led government of attempting to defame Punjab.

BJP Hits Back at Bhagwant Mann Over Deportation Claims

In response to Mann’s accusations, BJP leader RP Singh clarified the situation, stating that Amritsar was the closest international airport for flights arriving from the USA. Singh criticized Mann for politicizing the issue and spreading misinformation. He urged the Punjab CM to stop promoting conspiracy theories and suggested a more informed approach to the matter.

Mann’s Allegations: BJP's Conspiracy to Defame Punjab

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann expressed his concerns, claiming that the BJP government was intentionally choosing Amritsar airport to send back the deportees in order to malign the image of Punjab and its people. According to Mann, the deportation issue was being politicized to target Punjabis, as most of the deported individuals were from Punjab.

Mann questioned the rationale behind selecting Amritsar instead of a major airport in Delhi, raising doubts about the government’s intentions. "Why Amritsar? Why not Delhi?" Mann asked, stating that the deportation issue was a national concern and should not be used to defame Punjab.

The Background: Illegal Immigration and Deportation from the US

The issue revolves around illegal immigration, with many individuals from Punjab attempting to enter the US through dangerous and costly illegal routes known as "donkey routes." Following their arrest at the US-Mexico border, these individuals were deported back to India. The first group of deportees arrived on February 5, with the second batch arriving on February 15. Many of these deportees, primarily from Punjab, had sought better opportunities abroad, only to face deportation after their illegal entry attempt.

BJP’s Response: Deportation Logistics, Not Politics

BJP leader RP Singh dismissed the allegations of a conspiracy, emphasizing that Amritsar is the closest airport for flights coming from the US. Singh explained that the decision was based purely on logistics and not a political move aimed at targeting Punjab. He urged Mann to focus on the bigger issue of illegal immigration and to refrain from misleading the public.

Why the Debate on Illegal Immigration Matters

The controversy highlights the sensitive issue of illegal immigration, especially from states like Punjab, where many individuals seek better opportunities abroad. The use of illegal pathways to enter the US has resulted in numerous deportations, which in turn raises questions about migration patterns and the challenges faced by migrants.

While Mann’s allegations focus on the political motivations behind the deportations, the BJP maintains that the decision was purely logistical. As both sides continue to clash, the debate on illegal immigration remains crucial, with broader implications for both Punjab and the country.

Conclusion: Political Divide Over Deportation Issue

The ongoing feud between Punjab’s Chief Minister and the BJP over deportations has sparked intense debate. While the BJP defends its actions as logistical, Mann argues that the choice of Amritsar airport was a political move aimed at defaming Punjab. This controversy is part of a larger discussion on illegal immigration in India and how it affects both state and national politics. With deportation being a hot-button issue, it remains to be seen how this political drama will unfold in the coming days.

Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on Tuesday during a session titled ‘Waging Peace: Looking Back to Look Ahead’ , Tharoor candidly admitted that India’s diplomatic approach has, in hindsight, positioned the country as a potential peacemaker on the global stage. "An Egg on My Face" – Tharoor’s Honest Reflection "I am still wiping the egg off my face because I am one person in the parliamentary debate who actually criticized the Indian position at the time back in February 2022," Tharoor confessed. At the time, he had strongly condemned Russia’s military actions, advocating that India should denounce the aggression based on principles of the UN Charter, the sovereignty of Ukraine, and the inviolability of international borders . However, with three years of g...

Delhi High Court Denies Maintenance to Educated Wife: A Landmark Ruling

In a recent judgment, the Delhi High Court held that a well-educated woman, capable of earning a living, should not remain unemployed just to claim maintenance from her husband. The ruling came in response to a revision petition filed by a woman challenging a family court’s 2022 decision that denied her interim maintenance. The Court’s Stand on Maintenance Justice Chandra Dhari Singh stated that Section 125 of the CrPC aims to protect dependent spouses, children, and parents but does not encourage idleness. He asserted that women with professional qualifications and work experience should make efforts to become financially independent rather than relying on alimony. The court upheld the family court’s decision, noting that the petitioner had a Master’s degree in International Business from the University of Wollongong, Australia , which demonstrated her capability to earn. Furthermore, she had previously worked in Dubai as an Audit Associate at KPMG and later as an HR Manage...
