Trinamool Leader Krishnapada Mondal Shot in Broad Daylight in West Bengal; Critical Condition

West Bengal, January 25, 2025: In a shocking incident, Krishnapada Mondal, a local leader from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), was shot at in broad daylight in the Nodakhali area of South 24 Parganas district. The attack, which took place on Saturday afternoon, has left Mondal in critical condition.

Incident Details

Mondal, who was traveling on his motorcycle, was shot from close range by three unknown assailants. Eyewitnesses report that the attackers, believed to be outsiders, fired at Mondal before swiftly escaping the scene. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Kolkata, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The police are investigating the motive behind the attack, considering both political and personal reasons. Authorities have heightened security in the area, with alerts issued for the assailants.

Political Context

The attack took place in Nodakhali, which falls under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. While the police are looking into all possible motives, there are speculations that infighting within the ruling TMC in the area might have played a role in the attack.

This shooting is the third such incident this month involving TMC leaders. Earlier in January, similar attacks occurred in the Madah district, which led to the death of two prominent TMC leaders.

A Pattern of Violence

The first incident occurred in the first week of January, when Dulal Sakar, also known as Babla, a TMC councillor from English Bazar Municipality in Malda district, was shot dead. Investigations revealed that internal conflicts within the TMC, specifically in Malda, led to the crime, with party officials involved in the conspiracy.

On January 14, Hasan Sheikh, another TMC leader, was shot dead at an administrative event in Kaliachak, Malda district, indicating a disturbing trend of targeted violence against party members.

Ongoing Investigation

The West Bengal police continue to probe the cause of the latest attack, with a special focus on whether it was linked to internal party tensions or external political influences. The state's ruling party has been rocked by several such incidents, raising concerns over political stability and security in the region.

The Road Ahead

As West Bengal grapples with these violent incidents, the state’s political environment remains tense. Authorities have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice, while questions about the growing infighting within the ruling party continue to mount. For now, the state awaits more updates on Mondal’s condition, hoping for his swift recovery.

Shashi Tharoor Admits Misjudgment on India’s Neutral Stance in Russia-Ukraine War

Congress leader and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor has publicly acknowledged that he was mistaken in opposing India’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war when it first erupted in 2022. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi on Tuesday during a session titled ‘Waging Peace: Looking Back to Look Ahead’ , Tharoor candidly admitted that India’s diplomatic approach has, in hindsight, positioned the country as a potential peacemaker on the global stage. "An Egg on My Face" – Tharoor’s Honest Reflection "I am still wiping the egg off my face because I am one person in the parliamentary debate who actually criticized the Indian position at the time back in February 2022," Tharoor confessed. At the time, he had strongly condemned Russia’s military actions, advocating that India should denounce the aggression based on principles of the UN Charter, the sovereignty of Ukraine, and the inviolability of international borders . However, with three years of g...

Delhi High Court Denies Maintenance to Educated Wife: A Landmark Ruling

In a recent judgment, the Delhi High Court held that a well-educated woman, capable of earning a living, should not remain unemployed just to claim maintenance from her husband. The ruling came in response to a revision petition filed by a woman challenging a family court’s 2022 decision that denied her interim maintenance. The Court’s Stand on Maintenance Justice Chandra Dhari Singh stated that Section 125 of the CrPC aims to protect dependent spouses, children, and parents but does not encourage idleness. He asserted that women with professional qualifications and work experience should make efforts to become financially independent rather than relying on alimony. The court upheld the family court’s decision, noting that the petitioner had a Master’s degree in International Business from the University of Wollongong, Australia , which demonstrated her capability to earn. Furthermore, she had previously worked in Dubai as an Audit Associate at KPMG and later as an HR Manage...
